One part of applying to immigrate to Canada for work and to settle is taking a language test. With both English and French as official national languages, immigration applicants have a choice to submit skills testing in English, French or both languages if they are bilingual.
If you want to submit your primary or sole language results for English, you will likely need to prepare to take the CELPIP test. There are only two tests accepted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for English language proficiency, with one being the CELPIP (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program) test. Those who use the English language daily may feel that they don’t need to study and wouldn’t consider taking a CELPIP online course in order to help them prepare for the test, but this could be a detrimental assumption.
Elements of CELPIP Preparation and the Test
Consider that the CELPIP test is made up of four sections: reading, writing, speaking and listening. You may use English daily in conversation, but what about the written form? Plus, there is a difference between being able to understand the language and communicate from doing so with accuracy given how complex English can be. Many who are preparing to take the test consider a CELPIP online course to not only improve their language skills, but to also better understand what they will experience during the test.
Ashton College has been providing CELPIP preparation courses for a considerable length of time and the instructors understand how challenging the English language can be, while also appreciating the need for an awareness of the exam’s format. They provide sample tests to give students a real-life example of what to expect.
The test is not pass or fail, but instead gives a score-based result. These scores from each of the sections: reading, writing, speaking and listening, will correlate to a ranking on an English language proficiency spectrum that determines the points that are added to your immigration application score. When registering for a CELPIP online course or for your CELPIP exam, be sure to select the CELPIP- General Test, which is for permanent residents. Should you decide in the future to apply for Canadian citizenship, you’ll be asked to take the CELPIP – General LS.
Your CELPIP Score
Matters and Taking a CELPIP Online Course Can Help
Previously, it was
mentioned that the score you achieve from your English proficiency exam
contributes to your overall immigration score. This means, how you perform on
your English language test ultimately contributes to your ability to immigrate
to Canada. Therefore, the better you do on the language exam, the higher your language
score towards your overall immigration score.
You Can Take Control of Your CELPIP
Score
There are a number of ways to study for
your CELPIP exam and achieve a higher score. The first is to consider taking a
CELPIP course online to help you with understanding the exam format and
expectations. Second, it’s essential to become comfortable with using a
computer. In your exam you’ll be typing, reading, listen and speaking through
the computer, so being comfortable with this format is going to make the exam
much easier. Third, find a sample CELPIP exam and take it, using the same time
allowed on the actual CELPIP exam. Sample exams are included in CELPIP prep
courses, but if you’re not taking one, find a sample test to get a feel for the
format and flow as well as question style and set up.
A CELPIP exam isn’t just any test. This
is an exam that contributes towards your future and your dreams. Take your time
to get to know the exam format and prepare so that you can achieve the highest
marks possible.
